Description / Profile
Just outside Perth in Tasmania’s mid-north there is a small hill. The hill is significant in Tasmanian history as a place of grotesque punishment. It is where the body of convict John Mckay was hung for display after he was found guilty of murdering another man John Wilson in 1837. His body hung there rotting until a passer-by that happened to be an acquaintance of John’s appealed with local authorities to take down the horrific display. The practice of gibbeting had been ceased in England five years earlier, so this was the last ever recorded incident of gibbetting in a British colony. Anecdotes of haunting in the area have been reported in local lore for many years. Is this the ghost of John Mckay? This unconfirmed. The area is accessible, so when on your through the area some time, be sure to check it out
