Description / Profile
One of the most mysterious and fascinating caves in Greece, Davelis Cave is thousands of years old. The history of Davelis Cave is as fascinating as its geology. For many years, scientists have been exploring and digging this cave near Athens. Many artifacts such as clay, stone tools and animal remains have been excavated from caves believed to be inhabited by Neolithic peoples. Steeped in myth and legend, Davelis Cave has fascinated people for centuries. According to Greek mythology, the cave was home to nymphs, spirits of nature. Another legend suggests that fairies were so beautiful and charming that they were able to lure men into caves, never to be seen again. The cave is also said to be where Pan, the god of the wilderness, played his music and danced with nymphs. There are also rumours of buried treasure inside the cave. Legend has it that the Greek bandit, Davelis, who the cave is named after, hid his wealth and treasures deep within the cave’s labyrinthine network of tunnels. Many have tried to find this treasure, but none have been successful so far. . These caves were used by the ancient Greeks as places of worship, revealing evidence of their existence in the form of votive objects, pottery and other artifacts found in the cave. During World War II, the cave was used as a refuge by the Greek Resistance and remnants of their work can still be seen today. Other phenomena said to have been observed at the cave is glowing orbs and faint human shadow figures. Strange creatures have been witnessed around the site as well. Furthermore cave visitors are warned about the disorientating nature of the place as a number of explorers have gone missing never to be seen again.
