Description / Profile
Stortorget is the oldest public square in Stockholm. The square situated in the centre of the city has a long and bloody history. One such bloody event came to be known as the Stockholm bloodbath. In November 1520 the Danish/Swedish king Christian ll ordered the execution of 90 people for making unreasonable demands of compensation for opposing the king. Legend has it that every year around the date of the execution blood can be seen pooling in the cobblestones around the square. The spirits of the slain are also said to haunt the square. There is a red building in the square which was coloured to represent the executed people in the Stockholm bloodbath. Within the walls of the facade of this building are placed white bricks that represent all those that were killed. The story goes that if any of these bricks are removed the soul of one of the murdered will rise from the dead.
