Description / Profile
Frangokastello, on the Greek island of Crete, is well-known for its ghostly warriors known as Drosoulites, which translates as “dew soldiers”. These apparitions are referred to in this manner due to the timing of their manifestation. Legend has it that they are only seen every year on the anniversary of the Battle of Frangokastello, which took place on May 17, 1828. Hatzimichalis Dalianis is believed to be leading an army of Greek troops up from a neighbouring beach when the dew is low in the morning. Reports of sightings include a Turkish army in 1890 fleeing when they caught sight of them, and a German patrol is alleged to have accidentally opened fire on them during WWII.
